SKOPJE - TETOVO - SAINT JOHN BIGORSKI - KALISTA - STRUGA - OHRID
Breakfast. Departure to TETOVO. This town is famous for the Painted Mosque of the XVII century, also known as Aladzha Mosque (entrance fee included). Considered a masterpiece of Ottoman art, it was built thanks to the donation of two muslim women, Hurshide and Mensure, whose graves lie in the mosque´s garden. The building is totally decorated both outside and inside with floral and geometric motifs. The perfectly preserved frescoes and the wooden decorations date back to 1833, when the building was reconstructed and enlarged by Abdurahman Pasha. Departure towards Struga, lunch included there. We will stop to visit the Saint Jovan Bigorski Monastery (entrance fee included), one of the most important Macedonian Orthodox rite monasteries in the country. It is located in an area of waterfalls at the foot of the Korab mountain range. Afterwards, we will also stop to visit the Kaslita Monastery with its beautiful carved wooden door.STRUGA is famous for its Poetry Evenings Festival where poets all around the world come to this town and read poetry. The person who can best present the history of this event and the history of this beautiful town is Dusko Gjorgon, who was the official photographer of the event for fifty years. We will visit his gallery which is part of the family home, and, together with his wife who will welcome us in the traditional way with coffee and homemade cakes, he will tell us the most interesting stories, as he has made in his own house a photographic gallery of all the winners of this poetic event. Arrival to OHRID for overnight stay with dinner included.
Breakfast and visit to the historic centre of the most beautiful town in Macedonia, which is also one of the most fascinating in the Balkan Peninsula, declared World Heritage by UNESCO. Situated on the East Coast of Lake Ohrid, it is known for the beautifulness of its small white houses, its winding streets, and the prestige of its artistic treasures. We will visit the Church of Saint Sophia (entrance fee included) built between 1037 and 1056 which has very interesting XIV century frescoes and the Holy Mary Perbleptos (entrance fee included) from 1259, built with byzantine style shapes. We will pass by the church of Saint John Kaneo, one of Ohrid´s symbols. During our visit to the old town we will have the opportunity to know the story of the Ohrid´s pearls, famous all around the world, and we will know the Pearls´ Workshop processed by the Filevi family. Lunch included. After this, we will take a boat tour to visit the Monastery of Naum, located south of the lake. It was built on a rock overlooking the lake, this is a unique experience which you will not forget. We will do a brief stop to get to know the outside of the Bay of the Bones Museum which is located precisely in a bay. Dinner in the private Mal Sveti Kliment winery. *Optional - Boat tour by the translucent waters of Drin river which flows into the Adriatic Sea and which mountainous environment has a great diversity of flora and fauna.
OHRID - TIKVES' CELLAR - DEMIR KAPIJA
Breakfast. Departure in the morning to BITOLA and visit of this town. It was conquered by Turks in 1382, then, the town took the new name of Monastir. Between the many mosques built by the Turks during their occupation, about a dozen of them still remain. The most beautiful among them is Ishak Dzamuja, named so because it was built at the expense of a rich merchant named Isaac. We will visit the church of Saint Dimitrija (entrance fee included) and walk by the main pedestrian street "Consulates". Visit a family house in Bitola and enjoy a lunch prepared by a local family. You will have the opportunity to feel the typical Macedonian hospitality and discover their homemade gastronomy. After lunch we will dedicate the afternoon to the Macedonian wine whose origins go back to the XIII century and which treasure hides a tradition full of tastes and unforgettable experiences. We´ll leave Bitola heading towards Kavadarci. On our way we will first visit the Tikves winery where we will be introduced into the Macedonian wine world. In the same Tikves region more surprises are waiting for us. We will also have the possibility to visit the private wooden sculpture workshop of a local family who make beautiful and incredible masterpieces, and where we can learn more about the sculpture technique, especially on wood. It is another Macedonian story to better know the local and traditional customs, the Macedonian spirit, and today´s heroes that enrich our country with their added value. Later, we will leave towards DEMIR KAPIJA, another important Macedonian wine region. Arriving we will take an organised walking tour to Popova Kula wine cellar where we will learn about their wines. After breakfast, we will visit the town of DEMIR KAPIJA and its Wine Museum (entrance fee included) including the archaeological gallery, the wine gallery, the gallery of arts and the historic gallery. Walk through Barovi Vineyards where we will enjoy a picnic with an appetiser, traditional meze of cheeses, and, of course, we will taste their wines. Afterwards we will visit NEGOTINO and the first private wine cellar of Macedonia, Bovin wine cellar. In CHIFLIK, we will visit a local house and enjoy a lunch prepared by a local family. We will have the possibility to enjoy the food prepared by locals and taste their homemade brandy. Dinner and lodging in POPOVA KULA.
DEMIR KAPIJA - STRUMICA - RADOVISH - SHTIP - SKOPJE
Breakfast. Departure to STRUMICA. Today will be a special day. We will organise cooking lessons in RADOVIŠ in a private wine cave where we will taste the organic wines of a great oenologist professor. Have you ever tasted banuca or radoviski somun? These are local specialities of this region. What is that? It is a variant of traditional pizza that we all know, but this one is made using only good meats. We will continue our day visiting the archaeological site of Bargala, Štip. Bargala is an old town of the Republic of North Macedonia located in the municipality of KARBINCI, near the village of Kozyak only 15 kilometres north of the town of Štip. The archaeological site covers five hectares, including the ruins of a defensive compound, three basilicas and two basins used to tread the grapes. Southwest of the site, near the defensive walls, Church of Saint George is located, built between the IX and X centuries. Departure towards the capital. Arrival to SKOPJE. lodging and dinner.
